Youth Mentorship Program

Finding Inspiration in Every Turn

Kai Kweol’s youth leadership initiative empowers young people to take active roles in cultural celebration, community building, and program support through three tiers:

1.Mini Mentors (M&M)

Mini Mentors (M&M)Younger participants who learn foundational skills by assisting in workshops, supporting peers, and engaging in cultural activities. Mini Mentors develop confidence and teamwork through hands-on experiences.

 

Age Group: Typically elementary to early middle school

 

Roles: Peer support, basic workshop assistance, communication practiceGoals: Skill-building, cultural connection, early leadership development

2 .Mas Guides (MG)

Teens who serve as youth ambassadors, facilitating workshops, leading parade bands, mentoring younger participants, and supporting event coordination. Mas Guides deepen their artistic skills and cultural knowledge while strengthening community ties.

  • Age Group: Middle to high school

  • Roles: Workshop facilitation, band coordination, youth engagement, safety monitoring
     

Goals: Leadership, cultural pride, artistic growth

3 .Mas Council (MC)

A teen advisory group focused on cultural embodiment, peer leadership, and program support. Mas Council members represent Kai Kweol at community events, assist with recruitment and conflict resolution, provide feedback to staff, and serve as creative collaborators researching and sharing Caribbean cultural traditions.

  • Age Group: Older teens
     

  • Roles: Cultural ambassadors, peer leaders, program feedback partners, creative collaborators
     

  • Relationship with MG & M&M: Mas Council members mentor and support Mas Guides and Mini Mentors, fostering a tiered leadership community.
     

  • Goals: Advanced leadership, cultural stewardship, community connection
